What is the Iranian toman? Toman, rial and lira
Iran's official currency is the rial, but everyday prices are spoken and written in toman: 1 toman = 10 rials. Our toman rate is derived from Iran's Tether (USDT) market; it is neither the dollar rate nor an official rate.
Toman and rial
The toman is Iran's everyday unit of account: a price in toman has one zero fewer than the same price in rials. Figures in shops, rents and salaries are usually in toman, while banknotes are printed in rials.
A law to remove four zeros from Iran's national currency passed the Guardian Council in November 2025; the changeover runs over several years, with old and new banknotes in use side by side. The toman on our site is today's everyday toman (10 rials).

Our toman rate
We calculate the toman rate by crossing the buy and sell prices on Iran's Tether (USDT) market with the USDT/TL rate in Türkiye. It is neither Iran's free-market dollar rate nor an official rate; it is the Tether market's rate. Its source and time are printed beside every price.
Because a toman is worth a small fraction of a lira, we read the rate the other way round: "1 TL = … toman". You can convert an amount from lira to toman and from toman to lira.
We do not show rial figures: writing the same price in rials and in toman side by side invites a tenfold mistake.
Why the Tether market?
In Iran, rates announced through official channels and free-market prices can differ markedly. The Tether market's price forms continuously and in the open, and we show it saying exactly what it is (Tether vs the dollar). The method is described on our data methodology page.
